A SPECIAL DEDICATION from Sandra Dudley, Festival Organiser:

WEEKS SIX and SEVEN are dedicated to the musicians of Kent where so many servicemen were brought ashore to safety from Normandy in June, 65 years ago.  Amongst these were Sandra’s parents and grandparents and their friends.  Her mother and aunt as teenagers were on Broadstairs beach as the smaller boats arrived collecting names and addresses of ‘the boys’ to telegraph news of their safety to their families.  In 1946, Margate musician, George Vesey with friends including his future wife, Eileen Rickon (soprano) and Sandra’s father, Kenneth Allen (bass baritone) founded the Margate Festival Choir to help begin the long rebuilding of lives at Hell’s Corner, as Thanet was known during WWII. Margate internationally celebrated counter tenor, Alfred Deller (below right) was a frequent soloist, the BBC’s Stanford Robinson, Vice President and Conductor, developing choir expertise to a highly acclaimed performance of Elgar’s “Dream”. Sandra’s Choir history will appear later in 2009 on
